Hip Hop Icon Tyler The Creator Hails From Anioma?


The Anioma people of Delta State are known to have so many prominent personalities many of whom are trail blazers who have continued to leave their indelible footprints of excellence in the sands of time. This week, the surname of Hip Hop icon Tyler Gregory Okonma caught our attention for obvious reasons and that is the fact that his surname is a well known family name is a particular community among the Anioma people of Delta State, Nigeria.

Born on March 6, 1991 in Ladera Heights, California, USA, to a Nigerian father and a mother of mixed African-American and European-Canadian descent. Tyler Gregory Okonma is the son of a Nigerian father who said that he has never met his father.

His early life was spent in the communities of Ladera Heights and Hawthorne, California. He began to love music at a young age and at age seven creates covers for his future album by taking out the case of music albums. He started learning to play the piano at the age of 14. He attended 12 different schools in 12 years in Los Angeles and Sacramento areas. His stage name was adopted from a MySpace page which he created to post his innovative works.

Okonma came to limelight as the leader of an alternative Hip Hop group Odd Future and has since then gone on to enjoy a successful career. He creates artworks for the group's albums and tracks as well as the group's clothing and other merchandise.

He is currently signed to RED as a rapper, record producer, and music video director.
After releasing his debut album Goblin under XL Recordings in April 2011, Okonma signed a partnership deal for his label Odd Future Records, with RED Distribution and Sony Music Entertainment.

His second studio album Wolf released in 2011 received widespread positive reviews and debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 and sold 90,000 copies in its first week.


His efforts were rewarded with two MTV awards: MTV Video Music Awards, Best New Artist And Rookie of The Year; Most Followed Artist.

The creative rap superstar launched his clothing outfit Golf Wang in the same year.
In 2012, he started  hosting an annual music festival which he calls the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. He operates his personal streaming service named Golf Media which portrays original scripted series from Okonma himself and the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival which holds once in a year.

In 2013, his group was nominated at the NME awards as Best International Band. Tyler, the creator's music career hit the peak in 2018 when his album Flower Boy was nominated alongside Jay-Z's 4:44, Kendrick Lamar's Damn and Migos' Culture for the Grammys For Best Rap Album Of The Year. Kendrick Lamar picked up the award as he did for other Rap categories. Other Okonma's albums are Bastard and Goblin and he has been associated with over 15 internationally known musicians including Pharrell Williams and Frank Ocean.

Although, Tyler may see this article or not, but if he does, we want him to know that he has a very special place in our hearts. That you kept your African name is a true sign of love and we are obliged to love you back.
